Some Download Links

20 May

The Personal page is a little different. I always felt a little funny about the fact that regular backup software does not back up programs.

They tell you to get out the installation disks you got with the software and reinstall. Fine but what about downloaded software? Do you even remember the site you got things from? How about preloaded software and other software you never had a disk for?

I put download links for the latest version of much of the free software I use on the Personal page. All I have to do if I need a hard disk repair or get a new computer is go to the source on this page. If you want Open Office or Lazarus (Pascal programming like Delphi), or a good image manipulation program it is there. There is also a pretty good freeware ftp program as well as one of the best web page designers I have found.

Everything is free although some do have paid versions that do quite a bit more. It is simple to just try whatever might look interesting.

Listen to Your Caller ID

11 May

If you are like me and have a wired telephone where you live you can have your computer keep a list of all your phone calls.

It can also speak the caller ID information so you can decide whether you want to answer your phone.

You can also set up the software to zap unwanted calls.

http://www.terry6.com/personal.html has a list of free software I use that you can download and install. PhoneTray Free is the caller ID software you can install on your computer. All it takes is a phone connection from the modem in your computer to your phone line and caller ID service from the phone company (or cable) and you are in business.

Need Graph Paper or Music Paper?

10 May

On http://www.terry6.com/general.html there are several utility sites.

One of the most useful could be Printable Papers. In the middle of working on a project you discover a need for something like log-log paper. What do you do? Run out to the store and hope for the best?

Printable Papers will let you print on your printer a large number of types of graph paper, lined paper, music paper and much, much more. No need to worry if the store actually stocks what you need.

A site like this is really handy to have available.

Untracked Searches

17 Mar

If you look through all the available searches on http://www.terry6.com/searches.html there are some that do not track your searches.

Sites like Yippy, which is used in some schools, and a Google alternative DuckDuckGo state that they do not track your searches.

Sites like Google and Bing for instance keep track of the keywords you use so they say they can optimize searches for you in the future. Some people worry that this is so they can sell more advertising. Whatever. There are good and bad sides to most things.

You can use one of the untracked engines though and get good results too. Try some of the alternatives listed and you may find something you like.

Tetris Anyone?

29 Feb

Back in the 1980s there was a game that was practically hypnotic in its attraction. It was on just about any PC you would come across.

I found a site and placed it on http://www.terry6.com/general.html called TetrisLive. It has the old standby Tetris and a number of more ‘modernized’ versions.

Tetris is an easy game to lose yourself in. The shapes fall and you have to fit them together while they are moving by using the arrow keys on the computer keyboard. The up arrow rotates them. The down arrow moves them rapidly downward and the left and right arrow keys move them left or right as they fall. It is all so simple until you try it.

The first version is quite a handful for me. I got all involved and before I knew it an hour had passed.

EarthCam’s Metro Cams

26 Feb

On the http://www.terry6.com/general.html page there is a large variety of different sites available.

Browsing this page is quite eye-opening.

A site that may be interesting for a look is EarthCam’s Metro Cams which shows live web cams around the world. Some, of course, are less active than others at any given moment but all are a fascinating view of far away places.

What is happening in New York City, Moscow, or Tokyo at the moment? Check it out. It is all there.

Did you know there was a single source of world wide live video feeds?

The Big General List

20 Feb

The  http://www.terry6.com/general.html page is a real mixture of everything from how to text any cell phone anywhere in the world to color vision testing.

This is the page to devote your computer career to. There is something for everyone. It is alphabetically arranged by site name. It is up to you to try them out.

There are many, many useful tools you may find useful and have never thought of. There are also some game sites.

At least it will help you ask some intelligent questions about things in the future.
